It is primary agenda of SAP to enhance their product up to higher level and the Virtualization Technologies are always helping to increase the efficiency by providing a flexibility to divides the available resources i.e. Hardware and Software to run multiple SAP HANA Landscapes therefore, we decided to write about 6 SAP Certified Virtualization Technologies for SAP HANA Deployment.
Earlier SAP HANA supports Standard Deployment, MCOD (Multiple Components in One Database), MCOS (Multiple Components in One System) and MDC (Multitenant Database Containers) however, Now SAP has come up with new SAP HANA Deployment Type i.e. SAP HANA on Cloud (Virtualized).
The SAP Certified Virtualization Technologies for SAP HANA Deployment is having two types i.e. Static Hardware Partitioning and Software Level Virtualization.
The Static Hardware Partitioning is allows to partition the Physical Hardware into multiple parts by using Fujitsu pPARs or HPE nPARs etc.
The Software Level Virtualization allows to divide the available hardware or software resources into different parts by using VMware vSphere, Redhat Enterprise Linux KVM Hypervisor, Huawei FusionSphere, XEN, KVM etc.
Now, the SAP HANA Systems can be run on Virtualization Technology by creating Virtual Machines for hosting or deploying SAP Applications, SAP HANA Database / SAP S4HANA. As the SAP HANA has started supporting virtualized platforms so SAP has certified few Virtualization Technologies for SAP HANA Hosting however, some of the virtualization platforms are supported for Non-Production environments only.

The VMware vSphere is world widely used for all kind of Application and Database hosting because of its robustness thus, SAP also started supporting VMware Vsphere for Scale-up and Scale-out facility for Production Environment.
The latest VMware Vsphere 6.5 is supported for SAP HANA SPS12 and later releases for Production Single VM up to 4Tb Memory.
The Huawei FusionSphere is supported for the deployment of SAP HANA Production and Non-Production Environment in a visualized format.
The Latest Huawei FusionSphere 6.0 is supported for SAP HANA SPS 11 or later releases for Production and Non-Production Systems up to 1Tb Memory.
SAP has certified IBM PowerVM Virtualization technology because it is combination of Hardware, Software and PowerVM on the IBM Power Systems.
The IBM PowerVM LPAR on Power Systems supports Single-VM and Multi-VM scenario up to 8LPARs on 1 Physical Server.
The Hitachi Logical Partition Solution in Scale-up or Multi-VM configuration is a ready for SAP HANA deployment because the virtual appliance are preconfigured and ready to start operation with real-time access and analytics.
The Hitachi LPAR 2.0 is supported for HANA SPS07 or later releases for Production and Non-Production environment.
SUSE Linux Enterprise Hypervisor:
SAP has certified SUSE Linux Enterprise Hypervisor for deploying SAP HANA Non-Production environment only.
The SUSE Linux Enterprise Hypervisor is supported for SAP HANA SPS 09 or later releases for Non-Production environment.
Redhat Enterprise Linux KVM Hypervisor:
SAP Certified to Redhat Enterprise Linux KVM Hypervisor for deploying SAP HANA Non-Production environment only due its limitations.
The Redhat Enterprise Linux KVM Hypervisor is supported for SAP HANA SPS 09 or later releases for Non-Production environment.
All above SAP Certified Virtualization Technologies are having their own benefits, Advantages and Disadvantages as well however, it’s up to you which you want to deploy for your organization.
